Preparing Your Child for Their First Day at Aurora Montessori

July 10, 2025

The first day of school is a big milestone—for both children and parents. At Aurora Montessori School, we strive to make this transition as smooth, gentle, and joyful as possible.

Starting something new can feel exciting and a little uncertain. But with thoughtful preparation, your child’s first day can be the beginning of a wonderful journey.

Talk About What to Expect

Begin by talking with your child about school in simple, positive terms. Describe what their day might look like, the kinds of activities they’ll do, and the friendly faces they’ll see.

Stories, photos, or even a visit to the classroom can help make the unfamiliar feel more comfortable.

Practice Daily Routines

Routines provide children with a sense of security. A few days before school begins, practice morning rituals—waking up, getting dressed, packing a bag, and saying goodbye.

These small steps build confidence and help mornings feel calm and predictable.

Pack Comfort Items if Needed

For younger children, a small comfort item—like a favorite stuffed animal or family photo—can help ease first-day jitters.

Let your child know it’s okay to feel a mix of emotions. Reassure them that teachers are there to help if they feel uncertain or shy.

Stay Positive and Confident

Children are incredibly perceptive and often mirror our emotions. The more calm and positive you feel about the first day, the more reassured your child will be.

At drop-off, a cheerful goodbye and a promise that you’ll be back is usually best. Lingering too long can sometimes make it harder for children to settle in.

We’re Here to Help

At Aurora Montessori School, we’re committed to making your child’s first day joyful and welcoming. Our caring staff are here to support both children and parents through every step of this exciting transition.

We look forward to welcoming your family into our community—and to the many wonderful days of learning ahead!
