French

Language is primarily a tool of communication. Learning French as a second language involves the progressive acquisition of four skills: understanding, speaking, reading, and writing. This is a slow learning process, which extends over a period of years.
In order to help our students come to understand the global nature of our world today, it is essential to provide for careful instruction in at least one additional language. In Canada, it is appropriate to consider French. Our initial emphasis in instruction is on conversation skills and progresses to reading and writing.

At Aurora Montessori and Private School, an inviting and positive atmosphere allows the students to gain confidence and be motivated to learn this second language at their own pace. In grades 1 and 2, the emphasis is placed on learning to listen to and understand speech (developing comprehension affords the student the best immediate chance for success). Oral expression is encouraged and errors are treated with the utmost tolerance. A variety of natural themes are explored with visual aids and tape cassettes, which include dialogues, songs, rhymes, listening activities, and oral evaluation exercises. Class activities are varied; the children sing, dance, jump, mime, listen to stories, play with a ball, create objects, and act out situations. All the learning is centered around the student and contributes to his/her overall development.

In grade 3 Elementary French, some reading and writing is introduced and more emphasis is placed on oral expression. The student’s desire to continue to enhance their ability to use French as a second language is developed. Students learn how to work in groups and/or in pairs to make and present a final project. The themes center on telling real and imaginary stories.

In grades 4 through 6, the essence of French class is to provide an environment in which AMS students can feel secure and confident and be eager to learn more French. The students are introduced to basic French vocabulary, grammar and culture.  They also develop an acceptance of personal responsibility for learning.

In Middle School (grades 7 and 8), the students are prepared for high school French, with equal emphasis on oral and written French; with special focus on expanding conversational skills. The units covered in grades 7 and 8 continue with unique and interesting themes and end with special projects. More emphasis is placed on the full use of the French language in the classroom. For example, students are encouraged to use the French language when asking questions. Role-playing continues to be emphasized to develop a comfort level with the French language Themes include French radio and television programs, team and individual sports and summer camps.

In the eight years of Elementary core French, AMS students begin to develop competence in communication. For example, the ability to comprehend, to negotiate, and to convey meaning in an effective, creative, and culturally appropriate manner. AMS aims to enhance and nurture its students’ aspirations of using French as a second language.
