RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF AMS STUDENTS
Aurora Montessori and Private School, its staff, and parents are dedicated to the development of capable and caring young people. AMS is a place where every child is promised safety, opportunity, respect, comfort, dignity, and acceptance.
Aurora Montessori School rules can be grouped under the banner of good manners. By having good manners, students are free to explore the learning opportunities available to them. Everyone is here to learn, which is why great emphasis is placed on having each student accept responsibility for meeting the high standards of behaviour expected at AMS.
All AMS students, Casa and Elementary, are responsible for the tidiness of their school environments, inside the classrooms, in the corridors and outside in the playground. All school equipment and personal belongings are private property and are to be cared for and respected as such. Elementary students maintain a weekly – Friday afternoon – ‘check up’ of their assigned locker.
Students who repeatedly break the school rules and/or demonstrate constant disregard for the Code of Conduct may be asked to leave AMS to find a more suitable environment. Expulsion will only be utilized when all other efforts have failed and only when it would appear that the best interests of the student are not being or will not be met at the school. Whilst expelling a student does not necessarily preclude having that student re-enter in another school year, it does preclude that student re-entering during the same year.
CODE OF CONDUCT
All students, parents, teachers and staff have the right to be safe and feel safe at AMS. With this right comes the responsibility to be law-abiding citizens and to be accountable for actions that disrupt the warm, friendly respectful environment that is critical to the success of our students. All members of the school community are to be treated with respect and dignity. Parents, guardians, volunteers, teachers and other staff members, whether they are on AMS property or at school authorized events or activities are required to adhere to the AMS Code of Conduct. Failure to comply with the AMS Code of Conduct will result in expulsion from AMS.
Our Code of Conduct is based on the following fundamental beliefs:
- that the education of a child is the shared responsibility of parents, teachers and the child
- that children learn best in a positive, safe and inviting atmosphere
- that parents and staff share in the task of encouraging the development of academic skills, social and emotional growth and positive creativity in our students
- that members of the school community have a responsibility to maintain an environment where conflict and difference can be addressed in a manner characterized by respect and civility
- that there is no place at AMS for insults, disrespect and other hurtful comments or acts which disrupt our warm, friendly, safe environment
- that excellence in education is our goal and we have high expectations for every student, and
- that strong communication between home and school is essential.
