About AMS: Education
The Learning Environment
We believe in all of our students!!
Many schools, whether intentional or not, tend to reward students who exhibit academic success, while depriving those whom have fallen short of qualities and milestone that are commonly considered to be characteristic of “ideal” students. This type of learning environment leads to tremendous social and moral shortcomings on the part of the children involved. Not only do we consciously discourage this philosophy, but are also highly opposed the use of such systems in a learning environment. At AMS, we encourage and motivate all of our students to seek social and academic success; setting no limits for their individual achievements and goals.
Tools for Life
Our students learn to make objective and critical decisions.
The current global community is one that places increased demands on adults and children alike. This need is one that AMS is particularly successful in addressing. As young adults, and early on in their education, children are encouraged to develop critical thinking and objective planning skills. At AMS, our students are further encouraged to make decisions on a day-to-day basis, which in turn allows them to learn that certain decisions yield more positive outcomes than others.
To help illustrate this concept, let us imagine a new Casa student attempting to learn the proper technique of shooting a basketball during gym class:
Early on, time is given for the student to throw the ball in a manner that he or she feels is fun and engaging, however, the student may soon realize that their way of shooting is not yielding the best results, and with no inhibitions, the child will openly and actively seek the help of the attending gym instructor. Should the instructor deem it necessary to intervene prior to the child’s requests, the instructor will do so in a manner that is specifically geared towards fostering future interactions from the child.
Children are also engaged and challenged in their understanding of society, and the moral and ethical virtues that tend to produce the happiest, healthiest, and most successful members of their community. We seek to create and nurture the development of a strong moral compass within all of our students. In doing so, children learn to think objectively about their futures, and assess situations based on the consequences and benefits associated with their actions.
At AMS, we pride ourselves on employing a holistic style of teaching, which draws on the engagement of behavioural characteristics such as curiosity, analysis, innovation, and critical thinking in the classroom environment. Our teachers are driven to help students achieve academic success by means of following a highly personalized program of learning. This program is based on daily assessments made by the teachers on the students’ growth and individual needs. Moreover, all of the observations and assessments are then made available to parents during regular parent-teacher interviews.
Every professional working in our school carries a strong passion and ambition toward the educational development of each child. Their specialized training and ability to reach students in an engaging manner, contributes to a Montessori learning environment that remains one of the most recognized in Ontario.
