1) What does it mean to me that AMS is an accredited Montessori school?
Our curriculum, staff and materials meet the standards set by the Canadian Council of Montessori Administrators (CCMA).

2) How will I know how my child is doing on an ongoing basis?
  PARENT INFORMATION EVENINGS
On this evening, parents are invited to come to the school to learn about the curriculum and study plans for the students during the year.  Teachers make brief presentations and are available to answer general questions.

REPORT CARDS:  JUNIOR
Casa and Toddler students receive two report cards – one in December and one in June.  Parent/teacher interviews are arranged at the end of the first and second term.  For your convenience, babysitting will be established at the school during some of these hours.

REPORT CARDS:  SENIOR
Elementary report cards are issued three times a year.  Parent/teacher interviews are scheduled after the first and second term.  Progress Reports are a standard means of conveying/recording academic growth. Grades reflected on the report card are arrived at by a variety of different assessment tools.  Grading in physical education, music, French, computers, art and drama are formulated by the teachers of those subjects.  Parents are always welcome to contact their child’s teacher at any time during the year.

Every AMS student must return or pay for all AMS text books, library books and band instruments prior to receiving their June report card.

STANDARDIZED TESTING SCHEDULE
All graduating Casa students and elementary students in grades 1-8 will be participating in a standardized test once during the academic year. The tests are usually conducted in early May.  Parents may request to review the results. These tests measure the growth in the fundamental skills; vocabulary, reading, use of language, and mathematics. These skills are crucial to day-to-day learning activities as well as to future educational development. The test provides objective, norm-referenced information about a student’s development in the skills that are long-term goals of education-skills that constitute a major part of the foundation for continued learning. The test allows all students an equal opportunity to demonstrate their achievement levels. It is very useful to the teacher as an aid in individualizing instruction.

Teachers all have voicemail so a message can be left and they will get back to you as soon as possible.  You can also arrange an appointment with the teacher to discuss any concerns you may have.

3) Where do students go when they graduate from AMS?
Many students carry on with other private high schools in the area.  Equally, there are a number of students that move on in the Public/Separate School system.  The self-propelled attitude towards academics and the time management skills that our students coached in at AMS help them to excel in the new challenges presented by their high school environments.

4) What makes the “enhanced” ministry elementary stream different from an average ministry program?

The Enhanced Ministry Program offers smaller class sizes with personal attention to each child’s progress. The general culture of the school is one of self-respect and respect for others. The homeroom teacher provides the Ontario Ministry of Education Curriculum delivered in an involved, thought provoking and stimulating way. Each student also benefits from the specialized teachers in the areas of gym, French, art/drama, computers and music.  There is tutoring available for students that need an extra “boost” in certain areas.  The teachers are also more than williing to challenge children in areas that they may be excelling.  We believe it is best to maintain children at their age level if at all possible.  This means that if a student is academically in need of challenging in certain subjects the teacher will broaden the subject horizontally rather than simply moving the child up in the grade level of that subject.

5) Do you offer extended care?
Yes we do! Please visit the Extended Care section.

6) Do you offer programs during the holidays?
AMS tends to closely follow the schedule of the area Boards of Education.

Children can then benefit from socializing with neighbour friends as well as attending special community programs that may be running during these times.  Aurora Montessori and Private School also runs an exiting March Break Camp and a variety of Summer Camps that keep the students’ minds and bodies active, engaged and stimulated.
